Introduction

Would you like your child to have the confidence and skills to ride their bike safely on the road? If so, then our Bikeability course will be ideal for them!

We have teamed up with Norfolk County Council and Active Norfolk to offer these Bikeability courses as part of the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun programme.

The course is designed to give children, who haven’t been able to access Bikeability training via their school, the opportunity to attend training during school holidays. The course will cover Bikeability Level 1 and 2 training.

About Big Norfolk Holiday Fun

The Big Norfolk Holiday Fun activity programme is run by Norfolk County Council and Active Norfolk, thanks to funding provided by the Department of Education. It provides holiday activities for children and young people in Norfolk.

Children eligible for benefits-related free school meals can claim free spaces on the activities, whilst paid spots are available on many activities for those who don’t. Find out more about this in Active Norfolk’s FAQ section.

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for children aged 9-16 years old who can confidently ride a bike who would like to learn how to safely ride on the roads.

Course description

The course will cover Bikeability Level 1 & 2 training and is delivered over two days.

  • DAY 1 (AM) – Bikeability Level 1 aims to develop cycle handling in an off-road environment (playground) and prepare riders for cycling on the road. Riders must be able to cycle (i.e. pedal and glide) to participate in Bikeability Level 1.
  • DAY 1 (PM) and DAY 2 – Bikeability Level 2 will develop riders’ skills and confidence for cycling on local single-lane roads and simple junctions with mostly moderate motor traffic flows, preparing riders to deal with short journeys such as cycling to school or the local shops.

Each attendee will receive a nutritious lunch each day, so please let us know of any dietary requirements when booking so we can cater for them.

What will my child need?

Children will need a road worthy bike (with two working brakes) and a helmet to use during the course. Check out this video showing “How to check a bike is safe to use“.

If your child doesn’t have a bike or helmet don’t worry as we can lend them both items. Simply indicate when booking what equipment you would like to borrow and we will bring it along for them.

Children should wear suitable outdoor clothing during the course and bring a drink each day.

How much does it cost?

Children who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals can claim a free space on the courses (select “BNHF place” option below). For children who aren’t eligible for free school meals, paid spaces are also available at £75 per child (select “Paid place” option below). Both options include a free nutritious lunch each day.

If you’re unsure whether your child is eligible for a space, please see these FAQs.
