CASE STUDY – Little Riders help lady return to cycling after 50 years

Meet Billy Hosea, she lives just outside Norwich in rural South Norfolk. She cycled as a child and in her early 20’s but hadn’t ridden for over 50 years. She had lost her confidence and wasn’t sure whether she would ever be able to ride again.

Billy had been told about our Adult Learn to Ride courses by a friend who had attended a course herself in the past. She recommended that Billy should also attend the course to help her get back cycling after such a long break.

So she booked herself a place on one of our courses in Norwich. The courses were part of our work with Cycling UK as part of their Bike Bike Revival programme. The programme aims to help more adults begin or return to cycling.

“I just thought that it would be really good exercise. I remember the feeling of gliding past things on a bike and wanted to feel that again”.

She attended the weekly sessions where our instructor Jon helped her re learn the skills required to ride a bike whilst also building up her confidence again.

“The course made a huge different, it just made me give it a go. Riding a bike again makes me feel cheerful and pleased. I now want to focus on riding up some steep hills”.

Billy

“It was great to work with Billy. It was amazing that she had decided that she wanted to re learn how to ride a bike after so long. She was so determined and it was a pleasure to watch her improve each week. I was so proud to see her riding around by the end of the course. It is great to hear how much she enjoys getting out on her bike again!”

Jon from Little Riders

Billy was so pleased with her new skills that she has subsequently bought herself a bike to enable her to get lots of practice around the country lanes near to where she lives.

“This is an amazing story. It’s why we at Cycling UK and myself in do what we do through Big Bike Revival; to see people rediscover the joy of cycling, their sense of freedom and switch their form of transportation. Well done Jon and Little Riders, and very well done to Billie.”

Ian from Cycling UK

Billy wasn’t alone in being an adult who couldn’t ride a bike. Research by the British Heart Foundation found that one it eight adults cant ride a bike.

So, if you have never learned how to ride a bike and would like to learn, then check out our website for details of our Adult Learn to Ride courses. We hope to release details of further courses during the Spring/Summer very soon.
